The most common issue occurs when Java Application Files
are not properly associated with the Java Runtime Environemnt
(also known as "Java(TM) Platform SE binary")
during the installation of Java.

These errors include:

  • The program attempts to open inside of another program like Adobe Acrobat Reader or Microsoft Word
  • You receive a "Can't find lessons" error.

To fix this error in Windows:

Download the jarfix application and run it.

or to fix it manually:

In Windows 8:

  1. Open Default Programs by swiping in from the right edge of the screen, tapping Search (or if you're using a mouse, pointing to the upper-right corner of the screen, moving the mouse pointer down, and then clicking Search), entering Default Programs in the search box, tapping or clicking Apps, and then tapping or clicking Default Programs..

  2. Tap or click on Associate a file type or protocol with a program.

  3. Once the file types are loaded, scroll down to .JAR and double-click it.

  4. It should show Java as an option for associating the file type.  Click on Java to highlight it and click OK to finish.

In Windows 7 and Vista:

  1. Open Default Programs by clicking the Start button, and then clicking Default Programs.

  2. Click Associate a file type or protocol with a program.

  3. Once the file types are loaded, scroll down to .JAR and double-click it.

  4. It should show Java as an option for associating the file type.  Click on Java to highlight it and click OK to finish.

In Windows XP:

  1. Open "My Computer" and select Folder Options from the Tools Menu.

  2. Click on the File Types tab.

  3. Once the file types are loaded, scroll down to .JAR, select it and click on the Change button.

  4. It should show "Java(TM) Platform SE binary" as an option for associating the file type.  Select it and click OK to finish.
